Naguri is an old way of finishing wood, named in Japan from a word meaning beaten. The surface is worked by hand with a gouge, one cut beside the next, and the marks are left in place rather than sanded away. It is slow, exacting work, and the rhythm of the cuts belongs to the maker, so no two pieces ever come out the same.
This holder is carved by hand from a single piece of solid black walnut. It is shaped into a long, shallow boat, then finished in naguri across its hollow and polished by hand. Each scoop takes the light at its own angle, so the grain seems to move as you walk past it. A small brass collar, set into the walnut at the stern, holds the stick, and the length of the hull catches the ash as it falls.
It sits as easily on a tea table or a desk as beside a meditation cushion, and arrives in its own gift box. Each one is made individually, and we hold only a few at a time.
Product Specifications:
Each incense holder is individually hand carved and unique, measures approximately 20cm long, and weighs around 400 g. The brass stick collar is fixed into the walnut. Because each piece is carved and finished by hand, there will be slight variations in grain, colour and shape from the photographs.
Packed in gift box.
Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid soaking in water. A little natural wood oil now and then will keep the walnut rich.
