Boxing Day in Marshfield, late morning. The Town Crier walks ahead down the high street, and behind him come the Paper Boys, the village mummers. Their faces are lost under long gowns of newspaper strips that rustle as they move. Their play is an old one, about a death and a resurrection, performed in the cold outside the pubs and almshouses.
In the cottage gardens along the same street, the lavender is acting out the same story. By midwinter the bushes have gone grey and woody and look finished, yet every spring they come back green. Cut and dried in high summer, it holds its scent right through the dark months, which is why English households once laid it among their linen. A plant that looks gone by December and returns anyway seemed the right one to carry the name. Here it is clean and herbal, over a base of pure ground sandalwood.
Bright at first, then softer and warmer as it burns, a summer kept back for the shortest days.
