HONEYSTONE - Champaca & Sandalwood

Champaca opens golden and heady, the temple flower the Indians call champa, rich, with something of tea and ripe apricot. It rests on Mysore sandalwood, single-origin and creamy, the warmest and most rounded of the sandalwoods. A thread of vetiver runs through the base, cool and green and rooted, keeping the gold from turning cloying.
It softens as it burns. The floral top loses its sharpness and melts into the wood, until flower and sandalwood are hard to tell apart, one warm golden note with a cool green root beneath. That warmth is what lasts.

The name is home: Bath stone at golden hour, when the buildings hold the last of the sun and the whole city turns honey-coloured. A local sight lent to a traditional Indian pairing: champaca and sandalwood wearing the colour of the stone we live among.

Sacred Elephant's incense is made by a family of artisans in India whose knowledge of this craft spans more than two centuries, six or seven generations of accumulated skill, passed down and refined. In a country with no shortage of incense makers, they are among the finest.

Prema first met them in 2015, on his way to a personal meditation retreat in Vrindavan. The relationship that began there has shaped everything made since.

The process is genuinely collaborative. Prema and Yama design each scent, the character, the note structure, how it opens and how it develops, drawing on Prema's eighteen years in the ashrama and Yama's upbringing in the Peruvian Amazon, and their shared knowledge of how fragrance supports human life. The artisan family bring their generations of technical mastery: sourcing the oils, advising on what works, blending with a precision that only comes from that depth of experience.

The Spécialiste range is where that collaboration goes furthest. Higher grade oils, more complex note structures, scents designed for those who want to go deeper.

Every stick is made by hand. The oils are blended, the mixture rolled, and the sticks set out to dry in the Indian sun, a process unchanged in its essentials across the generations the artisan family have been doing it. Nothing is mechanical. The pace is deliberate.

The base is built from natural ingredients: bamboo stick, coconut charcoal, pure ground sandalwood, a botanical blend of herbs and spices, and the absolute oil that defines each scent. Pure, plant-based, nothing synthetic.

The Spécialiste range is made to a higher specification. The oils used are minimum double absolute grade, a technical threshold that guarantees concentration and purity. The ground vanilla bean used in the Luxury range is absent here, giving the primary oil more space. Depending on the scent, either the herbs and spice blend or the absolute oil itself is increased, pushing the fragrance further into the character of each specific ingredient.

Sourcing is built on relationship, the artisan family's connections with their suppliers run as deep as their craft. After a decade of working together, that trust is absolute.

Ahimsa, non-harm, is not a marketing position for Sacred Elephant. It is the operating principle. Every ingredient is of natural origin and plant-based. Nothing synthetic enters the blend at any stage.

Most incense on the market uses synthetic fragrance oils. They are cheaper to produce, easier to standardise, and they carry none of the character of the real thing. Sacred Elephant doesn't use them. The difference is in every stick.

The artisan family are recognised for what they are, among the finest incense makers in the world. They are paid and treated as such.

The packaging is designed to leave nothing behind. The boxes are printed in the UK on sustainably sourced board using vegetable-based inks, with a tree planted for every order. The shipping box is compostable cardboard. The mailer bag is made from potato and corn starch fully compostable, gone within two years, leaving no trace.
