Rain has just passed over the garden. The roses hang heavier for it, the paths are darkened, and rising from the beds, that green smell of wet earth.
The rose is from Kannauj, India's attar city, where the scent of rain on dry earth is captured and bottled as a perfume of its own. Here that rose meets khus, the cool, earthy root the Indians call vetiver, all damp soil and green shade, with a touch of kewda to lift it. Rose above, wet earth below: an English garden in June and a Kannauj rose field, caught in the same weather.
Green, cool and rose-soft. It lingers the way a garden does after rain, when the air stays washed for hours.
